Hui Ahurea Term 1 2025

The Māori Committee and department hosted the first Hui Ahurea of the year, held on Tuesday 18th of March. Every year we hold one Hui Ahurea each term. The theme of this term’s hui was whakawhanaungatanga.

The hui is organised and run by our Māori Committee which is made up of members from years 9-13, who are led by Whaea Aroha, Kōkā Ngawini and our Manu Arataki, Māori Department Prefect, Raumati Rameka. A huge mihi to our Māori Committee for their organisation and contribution to the afternoon.

Hui Ahurea is an opportunity to make connections between tauira Māori at PNGHS. We played kēmu such as Mauī/Mātau (played with rākau), Pūkana, Taniwha and many more. We also have a shared kai at every hui. We practiced, and for some it was their first time learning, our school waiata, Ngā Manu Hiringa.

Hui Ahurea is a great place to meet new people and to learn more about Te Ao Māori. There is no criteria to attend Hui Ahurea you just need to whakapapa Māori! We would love to see more faces at our hui. Look out for pānui in Term 2 and come along to our next Hui Ahurea.

We are also now planning our Pō Pūanga where we celebrate the achievements of Māori students and kaupapa Māori in our school. This is coming up on 17 June - Watch this space!
