On Sunday 3 March four PNGHS teams participated in the Central North Island Debating Championship at Whanganui Collegiate School.
With 33 teams competing this was the largest competition since its inception 25 years ago.
Over the day students took part in 3 debates before the playoffs and final. We had a number of students who were debating for the first time and their courage should be noted.
Ultimately, the final was between Palmerston North Boys’ High School and Palmerston North Girls’ High School on the moot: “Change movements (social, animal rights, environment etc.) should prioritise advocacy that focuses on incremental smaller reforms rather than absolute changes”.
It was a fantastic final with extremely sophisticated argumentation from both teams. Palmerston North Girls’ took out the trophy with the team of Hallie Williamson, Parnika Rao and Esther Steer.
Esther Steer was also selected for the Central North Island team for the second year in a row. We wish Esther luck as she competes in the national competition later in the year.
