Year 11, 12 and 13 students (and some Year 10) will work towards NCEA [National Certificate of Educational Achievement]. Students are assessed against achievement standards and/or unit standards, each contributing credits towards NCEA.
To gain NCEA, students need the following: Level 1 - 80 credits; 8 must be in Numeracy and 8 in Literacy Level 2 - 80 credits of which at least 60 must be at level two; the balance are carried forward from Level 1. Level 3 - 80 credits of which at least 60 must be at level three; the balance are carried forward from Level 2.
The Ministry of Education promotes Level 2 as the national minimum qualification recommended for school leavers. However, for students advancing to university, a specified number of credits from subjects on the Level 3 University Entrance list must be attained as a minimum. The majority of our students aim for this level of qualification.
Final assessments are either internal - assessed by the teacher at school at various times during the year, or external - assessed by examination or external moderation in November. Because of the ongoing nature of assessments, it is important for students to be at school every day and ensure assessments are planned for and not missed.
The New Zealand Qualifications Authority [NZQA] sends students a Results Notice in January showing the standards achieved from the previous year. A Record of Achievement that shows all standards achieved is sent automatically to Year 13 students in May of the subsequent year. Other year levels can apply for their Record of Achievement.
