English programmes aim to support students to become confident, independent learners who read widely, write and speak fluently, and enjoy challenges.
In keeping with the national curriculum document for English, all programmes at the school include reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and presenting. Students learn to think critically, explore language and process information in an environment which encourages creativity and experimentation with language, promotes ongoing literacy development, supports interaction and active participation and reflects its New Zealand context.
English is a compulsory subject through to the end of Year 12. A choice of two NCEA courses is offered at each of Years 11, 12 and 13. |

Three students published in 'Re-draft' |
|
At the end of 2008, three students were published in 'Re-draft', the national competition for teenagers which is sponsored by the School for Young Writers. Qi-Wern Lim (Year 13), Caitlin Simpson (Year 11) and Sara Lomaloma (Year 10) have achieved recognition for their writing skills out of the hundreds of entries that are submitted annually from both secondary schools and universites. The judges (James Norcliffe and Tessa Duder) pick only the very best for publication and the organisers stress that these students are "writing effectively at adult level." Palmerston North Girls' High School is very proud of the accomplishment of these students. |
