The Sports Department continually strives for excellence and improvement in all areas of sport including extra-curricular sports, sports events, sports exchanges and house events. The vision for sport at Palmerston North Girls' High School is to have dedication to be active, participate and win. Every student is encouraged to get involved in sports. Actively being involved in sport has many benefits for our students including improving fitness and health, improving self esteem, creating and developing a sense of belonging, reducing stress levels, creating new friendships and continuing with established ones. Students are able to participate at all levels and those excelling in sports have various opportunities to be challenged and extended.
Palmerston North Girls' High School offers a wide variety of sports for students to participate in. Third place was achieved at the New Zealand Secondary School Netball Nationals by the Senior A team. Many of the school's students achieved representative honours in 2009, with seventy students making Manawatu Representative teams, twenty six of those gaining further selection into Regional Representative teams. New Zealand Selection is the goal for elite sportswomen and up to thirty of our students achieved this goal in 2009. These students either represented New Zealand or were selected in wider squads for New Zealand teams. 2010 promises to be an exciting year for all our sports students and the school looks forward to witnessing further successes.
