The Sports Department continually strives for excellence and improvement in all areas of sport including extra-curricular sports, sports events, sports exchanges and house events. The vision for sport at Palmerston North Girls' High School is to have dedication to be active, participate and win.

Every student is encouraged to get involved in sports. Actively being involved in sport has many benefits for our students including improving fitness and health, improving self esteem, creating and developing a sense of belonging, reducing stress levels, creating new friendships and continuing with established ones. Students are able to participate at all levels and those excelling in sports have various opportunities to be challenged and extended.

Palmerston North Girls' High School offers a wide variety of sports for students to participate in. These include Archery, Artistic Roller Skating, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Canoe Polo, Cheerleading, Cricket, Croquet, Cross Country, Cycling, Equestrian, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Indoor Netball, Lawn Bowls, Multi Sport, Netball, Netball Umpiring, Orienteering, Smallbore Rifle Shooting, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Touch and Volleyball.

High Performance Sports Unit

The High Performance Sports Unit provides our elite athletes with important information on performing at the highest levels in sport. Their selection is based on the level of competition they are performing in and their dedication to becoming elite athletes.

This unit is both theory and practical. Throughout the year the group will participate in a variety of subjects including sport psychology, nutrition, time management, injury, rehabilitation and fitness testing. During the year guest speakers will be joining in lessons with the girls to share their knowledge on various subjects. They will also be doing out of school trips to the Massey University Sports Laboratory and the LidoAquatic Centre Bootcamp.

In order to be eligible for the unit, students are required to be in year 10-13 achieving at a Regional and/or National level in their chosen sport, meeting all school requirements, and be focused on progressing their performance in their chosen sport. Applications were advertised at the beginning of this year in the student notices and the new gym foyer.

Summer Sports at Palmerston North Girls' High School

Up to 11 summer sports are offered at Palmerston North Girls' High School. Students train and/or compete on a weekly basis in Archery, Artistic Roller Skating, Canoe Polo, Cheerleading, Cricket, Croquet, Cycling, Equestrian, Tennis, Touch and Volleyball. While events for Golf, Multisport, Orienteering and Triathlon are advertised for students in the New Gym foyer and individual notices. Individual sports such as Equestrian, Cycling and Artistic Roller Skating have a number of students competing at events throughout the season. Archery has seen a steady growth in numbers and 40 students now train every week. Cycling and Equestrian events have been successful so far this year. Students have competed at various equestrian events all over the North Island winning 11 medals. One student won an incredible 5 gold medals at the Horse of the year show including coveted pony of the year award.

The school has entered 8 Tennis, 8 Volleyball, 3 Touch, 2 Canoe Polo, 2 Cricket and 2 Croquet teams, as well as Cheerleading and Golf teams in Secondary School competitions. 15 of these teams have placed in the top 3 of their competition. The Croquet team qualified for Nationals and finished 13th while the Triathlon team won the U16 team title at the New Zealand Secondary School Triathlon Event as well as top 3 placing's for 3 students in various age groups. Palmerston North Girls' High School has continued producing outstanding athletes that represent Manawatu and Central teams. Internationally our students have also been successful, so far this year 3 students have competed in International tournaments for New Zealand and have won 4 medals. The New Zealand Secondary School competitions take place in December with Touch, Cycling and Track and Field teams attending competitions.

Palmerston North Girls' High School has achieved great success over the summer. This couldn't be achieved without the skill and determination of Students, coaches, teachers and all other volunteers that dedicate precious time and effort to sport.
